Bungo
Brisbane is a long way from the GBR, you will need to fly up to Cairns and explore from there or somewhere around there. Four weeks in Brisbane city? Is this a reccie trip?
calNgary
There is loads you can do from taking the boat to Tangalooma where you can feed dolphins, sand toboggan etc to spending a day at Streets beach at Southbank. You can abseil down the cliffs at Kangaroo point, pedal the walkways along the river on hire bikes, take in a show at the theater, have a drive inland to Towoomba and see some country towns, visit the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and see what they have to offer. You certainly won't be stuck for things to see and do. Cal x
tina0101
Visit Tamborine Mountains, take in the views at Mount Cootha, pop over to Stradbroke Island, numerous theme parks, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Australia Zoo. You could quite easily fill in 4 weeks. It's a 10 hour(ish) drive to the Great Barrier Reef - you'd probably need more than a weekend
fish.01
Brisbane is a long way from the GBR, you will need to fly up to Cairns... FYI, Cairns is near the top of the reef, around 1700km north of Brisbane. The bottom of the reef is around 500km north of Brisbane and is accessible with direct flights from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Hervey Bay or Gladstone. Islands like Heron and Lady Elliot. For example there are daily resort transfers from Brisbane to Lady Elliot (80 mins flying time). You can even do day tours to Lady Elliot from Brisbane....not cheap though. fish.01
Not the barrier reef, but you can also go snorkeling in Brisbane including at Tangalooma in Brisbane's moreton bay. Tangalooma has a ship wreck reef for snorkelling. It is a pleasant boat ride across the bay from the Brisbane river. Paul1Perth
There's heaps to do in Brisbane itself without travelling too far. Might be a bit of a treck to get to the Great Barrier reef but if it's something you really want to do and you might not come again then go for it. The Sunshine and Gold Coasts are both great and can be done on a day tour. Might be better though to spend a couple of nights in an apartment in each of them. Plenty to choose from and you get a better feel for a place if you don't have to leave and drive back in a day.
Chortlepuss
Don'f forget simple things like taking the city cat down and up river - Plus a visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (but don't go on the tourist boat!), Mount Coot-ha, day trip to Coochiemudlo on the Ferry, St Helena Island tour ex Manly, Walks around Brisbane State Forest Park - and as someone mentioned lovely Tambourine National park (which should be relatively snake free this time of year but wear good boots anyway)
